Protest march in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong
Hundreds of masked protesters formed a human chain and moved from Tsim Sha Tsui to Sham Shui Po. This is a demonstration march against new anti-face mask law, that start work today.

Amid protests, Hong Kong authorities ban masks during demonstrations. New law takes effect on Saturday the 5th of October. The order was adopted without coordination with the legislative council in the framework of the special law on measures in a state of emergency, which was developed back in English colonial times. Demonstrators call the ban "irrational and unreasonable". However, authorities believe otherwise.

Carrie Lam, Head of Local Administration: “The purpose of this regulation is to put an end to violence and restore order. I believe that most Hong Kong residents will accept it now. The measure concerns demonstrators who provoke unrest and resort to violence. Therefore, the regulation there are exceptions for those who wear a mask without breaking the law".

The point is that thousands of people wear masks daily to protect themselves from infections. Demonstrators cover their faces to hide their identities, fearing that their employers might face pressure from the authorities. Observers are wondering how the ban will be implemented in practice.

Protesters are determined: "We will not give up masks. We have to choose whether to wear them or not. Law enforcement officers also wear masks when they are doing their job".
