Robert Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for almost 40 years, dies
At the age of 95, the first president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, passed away.

According to CNN, information about his death was confirmed by incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Since the beginning of the year, Mugabe spent several months in a hospital in Singapore.

Mugabe was removed from power as a result of a military coup in November 2017 - after he ruled the country for 37 years. He won the first presidential election when the country gained independence in 1980 and became prime minister. Seven years later, he changed the constitution, abolished the post of prime minister, and appointed himself president.

Mugabe was sharply criticized both by the internal opposition and internationally on charges of violating human rights, corruption, a failed economic policy, and black racism. Many media called the African politician a dictator. Over the years of Mugabe’s rule, Zimbabwe has become one of the poorest countries on the planet. The average life expectancy here is 60 years - this is one of the lowest rates in the world. The unemployment rate reaches 80%. The healthcare system practically does not exist, and education is mainly available only in primary.

In exchange for agreeing to voluntarily resign as head of power, Mugabe (at that time he was the oldest acting head of state in the world) was granted immunity to protect him from prosecution and $10’000’000 in compensation. Moreover, Mugabe was promised to continue to pay a salary of $150 thousand a year. And his wife Grace, known for her love of luxury (who is now 54 years old), will receive 75 thousand of U.S. dollars every year until the end of her life.
